Mandolin
I make mandolins in both F and A-style, as well as my own Due model (two-point) combining the traditional mandolin and violin look and construction. This results in an lightweight, efficient instrument which has reserve of both power and tone. The mandolins that I make are unique for the use of violin design elements and violinmaking methods of construction.
I have eliminated the plastic binding from the edge which reduced the weight and replaced a non-acoustic material, plastic, with wood. The edge retains its function of protecting the mandolin from impact and serves to insulate the instrument from being damped by the player’s body. The inlaid purfling lines add aesthetic trim, and further protection to the plates. This change in edge treatment alters neither the outline, function or basic aesthetic of the instrument. I construct the mandolins on an internal mold, a traditional violinmaking technique, and assemble them with hide glue to create a lasting yet repairable bond. I use both X and parallel (tone bar) bracing patterns, chosen to match the wood and to voice the mandolin's tone. The instruments are finished with hand brushed oil or spirit varnish/french polish which reveals the wood's natural texture and reflection.
